Around the State - Games Played Jan. 30
Players Talent Prevails
The Best and the Worst of former SSFL teams prevailed in opening games, proving once again that players win games, in spite of organizational problems.
Representing the BEST category was former SSFL Champions, the Orlando Rage, defeating the Port St. Lucie Bobcats, FFA Champions and previously undefeated since their inception. Last year, SSFL Commissioner contacted the leadership of all Florida leagues as well as posted a plan on the internet inviting all league leaders to meet and create a Florida State Tournament. Unfortunately, as expected, league leaders in the FFA, SEFL and FSL never comnunicated, showing once again their preference to choose to criticise the successful teams in other leagues, but not willing to lay it on the line and decide the best of the best on the field of play. The players in Florida deserve that opportunity instead of the bogus so called National Championship Games that have no basis or credibilty.
The Rage, representing a team considered in the BEST category during their tenure in the SSFL had been maligned both as a team and individual players and staff in the FFA by league leaders and reporters, responded with the win over the Bobcats which should silence those detractors for at least a week. The Bobcats, a team laden with outstanding former players from the once powerful Fire organization, represent Minor League Football with class.
In the WORST category, proving that players win in spite of leadership, this week pitted former SSFL teams Ft. Myers Spartans Vs. the Sarasota Millionaires and the St. Pete Sharks Vs. the credible and outstanding leaderhip run organization, the Duval Panthers. The Spartans, Sharks and Millionaires, problem organizations deemed undesireble in the SSFL for specific reasons related only to leadership and not due to players talent and dedication, prove there is a place for teams in Minor Legue Football that would never be accepted at any other level. Players win games demonstrates the strength of SSFL players with wins in their new league. The Sprartans, violators of standards and rules had to account for their actions with positive results for the SSFL in the court system and expelled accordingly. The Sharks, once considered one of the BEST adminstrations when owned by SSFL Hall of Fame member, Pollock, in the last 3 years had deteriorated to one of the worst in SSFL history. Owner, Torryann Gammage has the distinction of being the only SSFL Hall of Fame inductee voted out of the HOF by the selection committee based on his conduct as the teams owner. The Millionaires, in 2009 experienced the greatest turn around from a disciplined organization to an organization out of control on the field, demonstrating intollerable disciplline problems which included brandishing weapons post game and resulted in conduct at the Championship Game in the Citrus Bowl that tarnished the reputation of the SSFL and still exists as a blight on Minor League football.
It is the year to open the eyes of those owners who wish to organize and operate in a professional and ethical manner. Those who embrace thug football, playing on non conformng fields, cancel and forfeit games, lie, cheat and take players money to pay for what an owner should pay for through good business practice - let them play each other.
If everyone exposed these people for what they are, perhaps Minor League Football in Florida could win back the reputation we enjoyed only a few short years ago and live up to what we tell the players and fans.
Preston McGann, SSFL Star Goes Pro
JJan. 23, 2010
At the conclusion of the 2009 season was it a surprise to Commissioner Dave Rice that Preston McGann would retire from the SSFL with opportunities to play professionallly? Said Rice, A surprise? Not in the least. My opinion is that if he was not affored the opportunity scouts are not doing their job. Preston, his dad and I have been in communication the last few years about his potential, and the contacts made are coming to fruition. If we had an SSFL MVP in the 2008 and 2009 seasons, my personal choice would have been Preston. In getting to the next level, personal
ambition, sacrifices and a lot of help from those in the business are a must. Our level of play is the most difficult level for players to be recognized by those at the top level, and to get to that top level, players must realize it is a step by step process. Preston has what it takes to meet that challenge."
Preston McGann, of the SSFL's Orlando Rage, played receiver and was a two-time Rice Bowl MVP. He has signed with the Columbus (Ga) Lions of the Southern Indoor Football League, reporting to camp last month.
"Orlando Rage owner Chris Morrison and Head Coach Leonard Opheim and staff had done a marvelous job in the utilization of Preston's talents enabling him to obtain the recognition he deserved. Too many Minor Leagues and team owners talk a good game about helping players advance, but, do not have the contacts or experience to make a players dream come true".
Good Luck Preston!

2010 RICE BOWL KICKed OFF NATIONAL BOWL WEEKEND
Saturday, January 16, 2010
Spec Martin Stadium, (Site of the filming of the movie "The Waterboy)
Deland, Florida
Florida Regulators Top Florida Crusaders 10-9
Regulators
The Florida Regulators from the Tampa area defeated the Florida Crusaders from Orlando in a tight contest that could have gone either way at any time. The hard fought battle, not surprisingly was defense oriented as generally speaking early season games tend to be. It was a great opportunity for teams to test their players at each position as they enter their leagues season.
National Football Events, Inc. presented National Bowl Weekend, Jan. 16 & 17, 2010, featuring 10 of the nations top minorleague teams in non stop action. Said Jum Nugent, President of National Football Events, "Kicking off NBW with the 10th Annual Rice Bowl with two Florida teams, brings regional recognition to our national tournament. The SSFL is no stranger to NBW and SSFL teams who have participated in the past have exemplified professionalism and outstanding football character and national recognition. The teams selected from Florida to play under the name of the "Rice Bowl" were selected based on that reputation.
The Regulators are owned by Rob Smith and Denny Randolph. Rob Smith is the Head Coach and Denny Randolph an SSFL Hall of Fame member, is the teams offensive coordinator. Former SSFL coach, Louis Briggins is the Crusaders Head Coach and General Manager and the teams owners are Chris Casler and Rick Warren.
Stated SSFL Commissiner, Dave Rice, "Knowing the men in leadership of the Crusaders and the Regulators, I had no doubt that the 10th Annual Rice Bowl would be competitive. Both teams exhibited disciplined, dedicated and professional players and staffs. When ones name is associated with an event, it is reassuring to know that the game will be presented in a first class manner, which it surely was".

It takes a year plus to organize a competitive team, develop an organization, recruit a staff and raise required funds to achieve success. The SSFL and SSFL teams are operated as individual businesses and as such, differ from leagues whose teams are in Associations with no expectations of making a profit. The terms, Sandlot Football, Semi Pro Football and Adult Ameteur Football are misleading terms too often used to describe teams playing at a level between college and professional. The SSFL expects a professional approach by owners, coaches and players.

John Bartolo
John Bartolo is a Charter Member of the SSFL since its establishment in 2000 as the owner and offensive center for the Broward County Chargers. From 2001 -2006 John was the owner and Special Teams Coordinator for the Florida Titans, a consistent contender for the Champinship. Serving the SSFL in many capacities, John was the leagues webmaster from 1999-2005. Commissioner Rice credits John with formulating many of the organizational procedures still existent in the SSFL and he is known as one of the foundation blocks within the league. The Titans were selected as the 2003 Commissiners Cup Award Winning Organization. John served as the host and game coordinator for the 2003 SSFL All Star Game played in the Miami Orange Bowl Stadium. An ever loyal league team member, it was John who first coined the title of the SSFL Championship Game as the Rice Bowl, a moniker that still exists.
John's experiences are best described by him personally. Stated John, " I was lucky enough to be a member of a group of team
owners who stood up and created the Southern States Football League
with David Rice, Commissioner. Under Commissioner Rice’s guidance and
the leadership of the individual team owners, I felt proud to be a
member of such a league for several years. Knowing that we had
something to do in making the SSFL the premier league in the south
created the feeling of a remarkable sense of achievement. As our
players would develop, come and go, as our seasons began, played out
and finished, I always felt the feeling of enduring pride and
achievement since the SSFL was constantly evolving, refining and
becoming a more professional league each year. I feel blessed to have
been a part of such an accomplishment from a league perspective and
honored to have been able to work with so many talented players,
coaches, officials, team owners and most of all, the families and the
fans. It was truly an amazing part of my life which I will never be
able to duplicate".
Rob Diebold
Rob Diebold, player and coach in the SSFL set many "firsts" in SSFL History. Entering the SSFL in 2001 with the St. Pete Sharks, coached by SSFL HOF member, Ernest Givens after playing with the Tampa Bay Cougars/Bulldogs in the United Football Legue where he was selected as an All Star in the 1999 & 2000 seasons. Rob was the offensive captain and played center. The Sharks season concluded with them winning their first of 4 consectuve SSFL Championships.
The first of his "firsts" was to be the first SSFL player to play internationally in Finland. The next season he played with the Tamake Lightninbg in Aukland, New Zealand where he doubled as a player/coach. His coaching success led to hs appointment as a coach of the New Zealand National Team who traveled to play in California and Washington as part of their national tour. Upon returning to the U.S., Rob coached with the SSFL's Cape Coral Fear. Robs 2nd "first" was to be the first SSFL player to be inducted in the Minor League Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Since then he has been the Southeast Region Director of the Minor Leaue Football Hall of Fame tasked with the responsibility of identifying individuals worthy of induction. The SSFL is proud of Rob and he expresses his feelings about his SSFL experience this way, "The SSFL in my eyes, was the best run, best organized league in the state of Florida, and one of the best in the country (having first hand knowledge of how things operate elaewhere). It was truly Minor League footbll at its finest. I'm proud to have been a part of it". The he Rob
Rod Harris
Rod Harris, formerly of the now defunct, Duval Lions and First Coast Generals of Jacksonville, was an SSFL 6 time All Star. He is the Generals all time leader in interceptions and the teams 2 time defensive player of the year. As a player with the Duval Lions, Rod received the teams MVP award and was the Lions all time intercepltion leader. His SSFL accomplishments provided Rod with invitations to several NFL camps and signed a professional contract with the
Hamilton Tigercats of Canadian Football League (CFL). In arena football, he played with the Jacksonville Tomcats for 2 seasons and made the All Arena team and held intercelptins records - most in a game (3) and most in a season (13).
Known in the SSFL for his tenacious play and on field leadership, Rod exemplifies outstanding football character.
Derek Mintzer
Derek Mintzeris one of several outstanding kickers produced in the SSFL. His SSFL accomplishments propelled his career into the professional ranks. In the SSFL in 2001 his 53 yard field goal was the best in the league that year and in 2006 his 48 yarder bested all kicks that season. His 5 for 5 PAT's is an SSFL single game record. Professionally, Derek achieved success in AF2 with tthe Mobile, Alabama Wizards and Gulf Coast Riders and the Florida Stingrays of the AIFA. He holds the record for the most points scored in a single game with 17 and the most field goals in a single game with 4.
Mike Shannon
Mike Shannon has been selected for the HOF Class of 2010 in the category of Player/Owner. Mike was an original SSFL member of the SSFL with the Space coast Panthers and the Orlando Panthers. His administrative integrity and honesty help set the foundations of the high standards of the SSFL. On the field, in his position at fullback, Mike was a force to be contended with for opposing defenses. States Commissioner Rice, "The SSFL has not seen the likes of Mike Shannon at the ful back position since his retirement. Power, deteminination and toughness are adjectives that come to mind when I think of Mike. Mike was an obvious SSFL All Star but as an owner, refused to nominate himself-another example of his character ".
John Porter
John Porter, selected in for the HOF Class in the category of Player is a 7 time SSFL All Star. He began his SSFL career with the Orlando Panthers and appears to have ended his SSFL career with the Orlando Rage, as he is anticipated to be playing professionaly in an indoor league for 2010. At 350 pounds and quick feet, it is no wonder John has received so many honors....led the Rage to back to back Rice Bowl Championships in 2009 and 2009, 1st team All American Honors in 2007 and 2008. Recognized for his accomplishments in the SSFL, John played for Team USA and in Arena Ball in the NIFL. Plying his collegiate football at Northwest Mississippi JC, he was a 2 time first team All State Player , 3 time All Metro and 2 time Defensive MVP while in HighSchool at Edgewater HS. Commented Commissioner Rice, "Anchoring the defensive line, one cannot underestimate his contibutions to the success of the Rage over the years. He played and acted as a true professional and exhibits the love of the game expected in SSFL players".
Jim Nugent
Jim Nugent has made a lifetime career playing, coaching, administering and promoting special events in Minor League and Semi Pro Football. Bringing teams and leagues to national recognition through his many endevors is a credit to his unselfish committment to this level of football. The SSFL is one of many leagues that have benefitted from Jim's events, in particular, National Bowl Weekend, sponsored by his organization, National Football Events, Inc. Since its inception, SSFL teams have participated in the weekend and have had the opportunity to play outstanidng teams from all over the country. Having a national flavor added to the SSFL schedule has provided many SSFL with the national recognition needed for the pollsters in thrir natinal rankings. The SSFL in general and the SSFL who participtate in NBW owe a debt of gratitude to Jim Nugent and welcome him as our National Inductee as a member of the SSFL Hall of Fame Class of 2010.

Commented Commissioner Dave Rice, The fabulous six players and coaches noted above represent eveything I had expected from being a part of the SSFL. We are proud of their accomplishments one and all, and expect them to continue to achieve success. Coaches Skip Poole and John Mackler are dedicated football men of high character, demanding their players represent football in the highest quality on and off the field. There are many outstanding players in the SSFL but Pee Jay Jack, Rashod Moulton and Chris Lucido lead the pack as the type of player any coach wants on their team. Their quest and desire for upward mobility is higher than any other players I have come in contact and that is why they have been able to take the next step in their careers. There is no doubt in my mind that they are the best in their position of any other players in the league in our 9 years of existence".

stIt started with 1000's, cut to 39 semi finalists and 12 finalists were chosen.
A Sports Reality Show, "Fourth and Long", headed by Spike Lee and former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin, featuring receivers and defensive backs in a competition similar to "American Idol", made its premier on May 18 with the selection of the top 12 contestants from 1000's of America's top football talent. The show, is aired on Spike TV on
Mondays at 10:00 PM. The winner of the competition will earn the oportunity to be a Dallas Cowboy for the coming season. Stated Commissioner Rice, " When contacted by the shows representative, I was told that based on the leagues reputation they would reserve up to 5 spots for SSFL players to be interviewed of the 1000's who applied if they were recommended by the players coach, owner and myself. Alan Kaz, VP of casting for 3 Ball Productions said, "we're looking for legitimate players who have the physical ability and talent to play in the NFL, we found it in the SSFL with Preston McCann".
The SSFL Family is proud that he made the CASTING CALL AND ENJOYED SEEING HIM PERFORM ON NATIONAL TV
THE SSFL CONCEPT:
The SSFL was established to blend the best of the NCAA with the best of the NFL to benefit the level of football between college and professional. Our prized possession and responsibility is our players. Providing players with opportunities to meet their personal goals vary - obtaining a college football scholarship, an opportunity to play at a level for pay, or simply, the opportunity to play for the love of the game. Our history proves those goals are met. Standards and rules were developed that are followed today by other leagues and are enforced to provide equal opportunity, uniformity, disciplined teams and professional presentations in a safe and family atmosphere.
The SSFL does not permit anyone associated with a team to be involved as a league administrator or officer. Such a
practive would be a"conflict of interest" and is contrary to having a checks and balances system to insure fairness.
The administration and staff of the SSFL is the only administration in Minor League Football held by experienced
former NCAA Division I personnel. Professionalism is demanded and the staff provides leadership to team owners
and coaches at any time on any matter.
Team Franchise Fee -Team owners, are individual business owners and purchase an SSFL franchise. The league
provides a list of benefits that are GUARANTEED to be provided and all owners know what they receive for their fee.
Team owners operate their organizations as an individual business following SSFL Standards and Rules. The
franchise fee is the team owners personal resposibilty and not to be derived from player fees an owner charges
team members. An equitable 6 month payment play is an option, but all due dates are enforced.
Player Fees - Fees charged by a team owner to players are determined by the team owner and the funds received
have no bearing on the Team Franchise Fee. Player fees have nothing to do with the Franchise Fee, benefits
provided by the league to the team owner or the operation of the league. The league has nothing to do with the
business between owner and player. Players are personally responsible to know exactly what they receive for their
fee from the team owner.
Team Owners are held responsible for meeting their financial obligations . No SSFL team owner ever avoided there
obligation to pay their Franchise Fee. All owners are treated the same, in a business like manner, with no
exceptions. Standards and Rules are meant to be followed and a no tolerance policy exists for anyone acting
contrary to those principles. In our 9 year history, the following teams were taken through the legal system and either
paid at mediation or as a result of a judges ruling...Naples Storm, Fort Pierce Fire and the Fort Myers Spartans. Most
recently, the Florida Thunder owner, Warren Watts, in his 4th league in 3 years (in itself an indication of problmesr) is
is due back in court on Dec. 16 for non payment of a judgement previously upheld by the court of $5,217.96.
Scheduled for 9 AM at the Collier County Court House, Naples Fl.
The Commissioner and other league officials are REQUIRED to attend games. That procedure follows every
college and professional league. Reasons Include: evaluating home owner management of games, evaluation
of officials performances, insuring standards are met, meeting on a personal level players and coaches, meeting
with media and interacting with fans.
The SSFL does not receive nor has received any "kick backs" from any business or individual.
Discipline is enforced for violations whether a player, coach or owner. In extreme cases, team coaches have been
banned from the sideline for a game and limited to the press box, players have been suspended from games due to
violent acts and one owner had been banned from attending her teams home game for uncontrolled actions, teams
have been expelled, an owner banned from all association with any SSFL team and officials have been removed
from the SSFLOA for inconsistent officiating. Nothing new in the life of college or professional league
Commissioners.
Standards and Rules are enforced uniformly, fairly and with no exceptions. A history of any and all previous member
teams violations and resolutions of problems are available upon request with documentation. There are no secrets
in the SSFL and we encourage communications to clear the air when hearing of any unfounded rumor associated
with league decisions.
League Size - The SSFL believes strongly the size of the league should never exceed 12 teams or a minimum of 6 as
the league develops. Leagues are notorious at this level as they accept teams in order to obtain team dues and
build a war chest of money to benefit only a few. A review of leagues in the last 3 years where membership
exceeded 12 indicated the same teams year in and year out were guaranteed through scheduling, the greatest
opportunity to succeed. The teams at the bottom half of the league paid for the befefits derived by those at the
top. Forfeits, poor facilities, exorbitant score differences all add up to inflated won loss records as generally, only
the top teams actually meet in a playoff situation.

Quality Stadiums - A Feature of the SSFL
The Citrus Bowl & the SSFL Since 2004
The relationship between the Citrus Bowl and the SSFL began in 2004. Team owners adopted the concept that the championship game be the leagues premier event of the year. Providing the opportunity for players and coaches to experience participating in a major stadium with all of the amenities that major college and professional teams experience, was deemed to be a great way to end the season. Many players have indicated that being a part of that experience has been one of the highlights in their Minor League careers.
Playing in the Championship, honoring league All Star players, officials, ball boys, coaches and teams, is a great motivator for all to set goals for the next season. For the ATTENDANCE RECORD BREAKING 2008 game, honoring the
first class of SSFL Hall of Fame was an added attraction and provided the opportunity for Hall of Famers to renew old aquintances. They are the "Role Models" for this, and future generations of the SSFL.
The operational costs for the game are included in team dues as ticket sales in Minor League football would not provide adequate support.

Standards and Rules
SSFL STANDARDS and RULES were developed and approved in 2000 by the Charter Members of the League and reviewed annually by the membership. The American Football Association publicized SSFL Standards and Rules and the establishment of the SSFL Officials Associaton to the 65 leagues nationwide and presently many have adopted these administrative guidelines. Combining the best of the NCAA with the best in the NFL is the goal of the SSFL. The SSFL is proud to have contributed to the positive aspects of Minor League Football by providing leagues with a basis to operate.
Annually, the Standards and Rules are reviewed by the members at the request of the Commissioner and any recommended changes are discussed and voted on by team owners. A majority vote is required for change and the addition of new rules and standards.
Maintaining publicized Standards and Rules guarantees that every team can expect similarities in facilities and game conduct. However, rules and standards in writing are not the answer, rather, enforcement is the foundation in maintaining a professionally run league.
Stated the SSFL League Commissioner, "Quality stadiums meeting SSFL Minimum Standards and Enforcement of Rules, attract quality players and fans. Safe playing fields, excellent field lights, well lit and secure parking facilities, uniformed security, press box, PA system, play by play announcers, on field microphone for the referee, family oriented music and well equipped snack bars all contribute to the enjoyment of attending SSFL games. SSFL rulesprovide options, approved by the membershp to address particular facility issues encounterd by present and futureleague members. Seven on field game officials, one official clock operator and professional coaching staffs insure that conduct on the field is maintained.
SSFL TEMPORARILY CEASES OPERATION FOR 2010 SEASON
RE-ORGANIZATON PLANS FOR THE 2011 SEASON
er 9 years of operation, Commissioner Dave Rice announced to the membrship on August 1 that
All teams were released from their membership obligations and instructed to explore other league affiliation for the 2010 season and return to the SSFL in 2011. Stated Commissioner Rice, " The SSFL has enjoyed many successes in the last 10 years as noted in the list of accomplishments and the advancement of many of our coaches and players. Recently the standards which the SSFL started in 1999 have deteriortated and a year off is important to reorganize and return to the basics that the SSFL was established. Team owners that operate their organization with good business principles with a goal to operate at a profit, provide leadership to their players and value ETHICS, OBSERVANCE OF RULES, STANDARDS and DISCIPLINE are encouraged to contact Commissioner Dave Rice to learn more about how the SSFL has and will opearte.
MINOR LEAGUE FOOTBALL HAS A VOLITILE PAST and...
much is learned from past experiences. Teams that had been expelled or their membersip not revewed due to their
lack of living up to rules and standards find other places to play, and, as history has proven, continue to be the problem
they were in the SSFL, and a blight on the great game of football. Their continued existence under those circumstances makes it only more difficult for those administrators who value Minor League Football as a stepping stone for players and coaches to advance to another level or simply provide a football opportunity for those who play just for the love of playing in a professional manner which makes their community proud. Some teams hide behind the true facts by saying "they resigned", but they did so knowing the hammer was falling based on their lack of ethical administrative control. The SSFL has and always had a NO TOLERANCE POLICY that resulted from ridding the league of team owners that too often exhibited lies, bounced checks, and the inability to follow rules and standards. Those are the type of people who prefer to blame others for their actions.
Interesting Facts: In 9 years, the SSFL has had the following number of teams change for various reasons:
Expelled from the League Disbanded Moved to Another League Was in process of not
in good standing being renewed but left
the SSFL before being notified.
